FAQ

A place to answer the most common questions for new instructors at AAU.

Q: Where are the students in their education?

This is a great question to ask, and I usually like to take 20 minutes in my first day of class and do a quick poll: what assignments have they done before? It's a great way to get a sense of what their experience level is, and if there are any surprising gaps in their education. Based on where they are in their educational career, students will have done most of the following:

common Character 1 assignments:
  • Bouncing Ball
  • Pendulum
  • Sit Down, Stand up, Turn in Place
  • Simple Jump
  • Change of Emotion
  • Basic Pantomime Acting
common Character 2 assignments:
  • Walk (or Run) Cycle
  • Quadruped Walk
  • Weight Lift
  • Basic Lip Sync
  • Throwing a Ball
  • Advanced Pantomime Acting
common Character 3 assignments:
  • 2 Characters Acting with Lip Sync
  • 2 Characters Dancing or Grappling
  • Realistic Creature (non-humanoid)  Performance
  • Complex Leaping, Climbing, Jumping
  • Movement Set for Video Game Character
By the end of character 3, students should have established good work practices and have all the requisite skills to generate any animation possible (at an entry level animator position.)
